Colleagues,
At our Middle School All-District Band event, I appointed a committee chaired by Jim Meredith to propose a set of guidelines and procedures for the use of student-owned cell phones at District events. I am attaching that policy to this e-mail.
It is unfortunate that we have to be this specific when it comes to cell phones; however, with this digital age, we need to face the possibilities that exist.
My thanks to Jim and his committee for this proposal. Unless I receive overwhelming negative criticism, this policy will be in force for the 2008-2009 school year, and will be added to all District Event information (auditions, District Band Event, and Concert Festival). You can email your comments by clicking on the link on the first page (index page) of the district website at
www.vboda6.org.One additional reminder - Jim Meredith will be the Chair for the 2008-09 school year. I will continue to receive all audition judging requests (go to the audition pages of the website) through June 30, and I will give that list to Jim for next year. I hope that all of your spring programs go well, and look forward to seeing each of you in the fall!
Jim Paxton, Chair - 2007-08 - District VI

CELL PHONE
POLICY STATEMENT
FOR VBODA 6 DISTRICT EVENTS
The Instrumental
music teachers of VBODA District 6 realize the importance of cell phone
technology and its application in students’ lives. However, we also realize
that improper use of cell phones by students at all-district band tryouts and
during all-district band rehearsals might compromise the honesty, efficiency,
and educational objectives of our district events. The following policies will
be enforced at Middle School and High School All-District auditions,
All-District event weekends, and at District Concert Festival.
We
recommend the following procedures to insure efficient and reliable results.
All-District Band Auditions
Student use of
cell phones at any time before, during, or after the student’s audition is
forbidden. On the day of the event,
prior to entering the host school, students must either leave their cell phones
on their bus or turn them over to their director or his/her adult designee.
Failure
to adhere to this policy may result in the student’s disqualification from the
event and the student's audition fee is not refundable.
All-District Band Event Rehearsals
Cell phones are
not allowed in any rehearsal area. Wireless
devices must be left in instrument cases, travel bags, or book bags away from
the student’s ensemble and must be TURNED OFF DURING ALL REHEARSALS.
Failure
to adhere to this policy may result in the student’s disqualification from the
event and the student's participation fee is not refundable.
District Concert Festival
Student use of
cell phones at District Concert Festival is forbidden. This includes on stage,
in the warm-up room, in the sight reading room, and in the auditorium.
Participating directors are expected to establish their own cell phone
procedures that will support this policy, and directors are responsible for
their students’ compliance with the spirit of this policy.
Failure
to adhere to this policy may result in the student or the participating band’s
disqualification from the event. Band registration and participation fees
are not refundable.
